Maximizing Your College Application: Tips for Students Aged 18-29

Congratulations on submitting those college applications! Before you start celebrating, remember that there's still work to be done. Here are six action steps to take to make sure you're fully prepared for college life:

Let’s take a closer look at six action steps to take once you’ve applied to college:

1. Relax 

You'll have to wait until you hear back from colleges, but take this time to give your brain a break. Get out and get some exercise, try something new like yoga or meditation, or even start a new hobby like knitting. This is an exciting new chapter beginning, so take the time to write down your thoughts in a journal or start writing some fiction.

2. Don't forget your grades

Keep up the same quality of work you've had throughout your academic career. Colleges and universities can and may rescind an acceptance letter if your final academic transcript shows a drop in grades.

3. Look for financial aid

The first step is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Do your homework early and make a trip to your college's financial aid office for additional support.

4. Follow up with the admissions office

Call the admissions office to ensure they have received all of your application materials, but don't ask about the status of your application.

5. Check your messages regularly:

This will help you respond quickly and professionally to any requests from the admissions or financial aid office.

6. Prepare for college life:

Start reading up on how to pick a major, what to look for in an advisor, and how to prepare for dorm life. Make a list of resources to secure school supplies, and if you need a new computer, start shopping now.

College is a significant undertaking, but it's an exciting new adventure! Make sure you take the time to rest, read up, and get your finances in order. Enjoy the last bit of high school and then, get ready to go!
